In 2015, injuries to the upper extremity made up the greatest number of reported injuries (The Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015). The most frequent injuries reported were musculoskeletal disorders; sprains, strains, and tears; fractures; and carpal tunnel syndrome. Key Therapy Services is able to assess and treat workers with upper extremity injuries, working closely with the injured worker, employer, and treating physician. Effective treatment can be done on site to minimize time away from work. As a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) and Occupational Therapist, Kerry Raymond is able to collaborate with the company’s occupational health department to provide the injured employee with light duty alternative job duties to minimize time away from work. Not only will the employee have hands-on treatment by a Certified Hand Therapist, but preferred body mechanics, stretches, and education will be provided to minimize the chance of re-injury. Treatments can include:
- Range of motion
- Joint mobilization
- Soft tissue mobilization
- Modalities such as ultrasound, iontophoresis, or TENS
- Stretches
- Strengthening
- Education
Common work injuries that can be treated include:
- Tendonitis of the shoulder and forearm
- Lateral and medial epicondylitis
- Common nerve injuries such as carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel, and radial tunnel syndrome
- Fractures of the hand, wrist, and arm
- Sprains and strains of the upper extremity
